Surrendering a Pet
If you must surrender your pet, please note the following: You need to attempt to rehome your pet on our Facebook and other social media pages before contacting HSforBC. Please use our Rehoming Tips to rehome your pet before calling HSforBC. You must be a Boone County resident to ask
for surrender help.
All surrenders are by appointment only. Call our 877-473-6722 number and leave a message. A volunteer will call you back within 24 to 48 hours.
We cannot take in feral cats or dogs with aggressive behavior or bite histories.
HSforBC volunteers will need to know the following information to consider accepting your pet as a surrender:
Remember that you know your pet best. You will be the most honest and best advocate to give HSforBC the information needed to place your pet in a furever home. If your pet has a bite history, you must to share that information. An informed new owner is more likely to provide a furever home.
Recommended surrender donations are $25 per cat and $50 per dog. These doantions help offset the cost of their care.

- Age?
- Is your pet spayed or neutered?
- Is your pet up to date on vaccinations? Please provide a copy of the veterinary records and Rabies vaccination certificate.
- Is your pet microchipped?
- Is your pet up to date with heartworm prevention given?
- Are any maintenance medicines needed?
- What are your pet’s likes, dislikes, good with children, good with other dogs, good with cats, etc.
- Has your pet bitten another animal or human?
