Finding Owner of Lost Pet
Can you hold the stray?
If the pet is friendly, seems healthy and you have the ability to safely to do, check for a tag or identification on the collar (dogs and cats). If possible, and you can safely do so, contain the stray away from your own personal pets. A contained stray is a safe stray. Strays must be held for seven (7) days in Boone County before ownership is relinquished to a finder.
If the pet is friendly, you can take the pet to a veterinarian to check for a microchip. If a chip is found, the veterinarian will likely help you contact the owner of the pet. You will not be able to leave the stray at the vet. You will need to keep the stray contained at your property while contacting the owner.
Post a good photo, contact information and nearest intersection where the pet was found on HSforBC’s “Friends of Humane Society for Boone County” Facebook page. Also post on your local Facebook neighborhood pages, and Nexxt door pages if you are a member.
Go to the Indy Lost Pet Alert website and enter the information necessary to create a Found Pet Report that will be seen throughout central Indiana on Facebook and the website. http://www.indylostpetalert.com
If you do not have e-mail access, call HSforBC at 1-877-HSforBC (877-473-6722) to leave Found Report. Notify shelters and rescue organizations in surrounding counties about the pet you found. Pets can wander!
Make a “Found Pet” flyer with a brief description of the pet and your contact information. Do not include too much detail so if someone claims to own the pet that person can provide details others would not know.
Distribute the flyer to local vet clinics, kennels and groomers, and animal related businesses. Most have bulletin boards where you can post your flyer. Hand your flyer out to homes in the area where the stray was found. Place a Found Pet advertisement in The Lebanon Reporter. They will print a found ad for a pet at no cost.
Screen responses to verify ownership before relinquishing the pet. The owner should be able to give you specific details about the pet, the pet’s name and provide proof of ownership through veterinary records and photographs.
If you are unable to find an owner, notify HSforBC by e-mail at [email protected]. Please include a photo of the pet, and provide your contact information, date the pet was found, nearest intersection where found, collar/tag info, and any distinctive features of the pet.
